Amidst escalating unrest in Nepal, the Chief of Army Staff, General Ashok Raj Sigdel, has addressed the nation, assuring citizens of the army's commitment to their protection and urging protesters to seek peaceful resolutions through dialogue. The appeal comes as the country grapples with violent protests, primarily led by the younger "Gen Z" generation, triggered by a ban on social media platforms and widespread anger over corruption and alleged misgovernance.

General Sigdel, in a video address on Tuesday evening, called on all parties involved to suspend their agitation programs and engage in negotiations to restore stability and resolve tensions without further unrest. He stressed that the safety and supreme interests of the nation must remain a priority during this challenging period. The Army Chief also expressed condolences to the families affected by the violence and emphasized the army's responsibility to protect citizens, national assets, and diplomatic missions.

The protests, which began in response to the government's ban on social media, quickly evolved into a broader movement fueled by public frustration with political parties. Demonstrators have accused leaders of corruption and nepotism, leading to widespread unrest in Kathmandu and other major cities. The situation escalated dramatically, with protesters setting fire to the Parliament building and other key government structures. In response, the Nepal Army has issued a stern warning against vandalism, looting, and arson, vowing to take decisive measures to restore order. The Army has stated that security agencies, including the Nepali Army, will take control of the situation to ensure the safety and security of the country and its people.

The joint appeal from the Nepali Army and chiefs of other security agencies urged protesters to exercise restraint and seek a resolution through dialogue. They emphasized that allowing further loss of life and property should be avoided in this difficult situation. The statement highlighted that a peaceful resolution through dialogue is the only way to restore order and stability.

The Prime Minister of Nepal, K.P. Sharma Oli, resigned amidst the continuing anti-corruption protests across the country. The resignation came as demonstrators continued to defy curfews and clash with security forces. Following the Prime Minister's resignation, the Nepal Army has taken charge of security operations.

The Nepal Army has also reached out to the public, particularly the youth, urging them to remain calm and maintain social harmony and national unity. They have emphasized the importance of protecting the nation's historical, cultural, and archaeological heritage during this critical period. The Army reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Nepal's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the lives and property of its citizens.

The ongoing crisis has drawn international attention, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing his concern over the violence and loss of young lives. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has also expressed alarm at the escalating violence and insisted that dialogue is the best way to address the concerns of the Nepalese people.
