A tragic accident in Tamil Nadu has claimed the life of a 52-year-old woman after her hair became entangled in a service lift. The incident occurred on Thursday night at a commercial complex near Gandhi Market in Trichy.
The victim, identified as D. Sumathi, was an employee at a private hardware company. At approximately 9:45 p.m., Sumathi was using the service lift to travel to the third floor of the building. While ascending, her hair became trapped in the lift mechanism, resulting in fatal head injuries.
Police have registered a case of suspicious death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Authorities arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and transported Sumathi's body to MGMGH for a post-mortem examination. Investigations are currently underway.
This incident highlights the potential dangers associated with elevators and lifts, and the importance of safety measures to prevent such tragedies. There have been other instances of lift-related fatalities in India. In July of this year, a businessman in Meerut died after becoming trapped in a lift when the power went out. As he peered out, power was restored and the lift resumed operation, causing fatal injuries. In 2020, a woman working at St. George Hospital in Mumbai died after her hair became stuck in a moving lift. In 2016, a 69-year-old woman in Chennai died after falling from the fourth floor of an apartment building while trying to open a stuck elevator. These incidents often involve technical malfunctions, power outages, or a lack of safety precautions.
