A 38-year-old woman, Gaganpreet Makkar, has been arrested in Delhi after a BMW she was driving struck a motorcycle, resulting in the death of Navjot Singh, a 52-year-old Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, and critically injuring his wife, Sandeep Kaur. The incident occurred in the Dhaula Kuan area of southwest Delhi on Sunday afternoon.
Makkar, a resident of Gurugram, was traveling with her husband, two children, and a maid when the accident took place. According to police reports, the BMW hit the couple's motorcycle near the Cantonment metro station. Following the collision, Makkar and her husband transported the victims to a hospital in GTB Nagar, approximately 20 kilometers away from the scene.
The police have registered a case of culpable homicide against Makkar under sections 281, 125B, 105, and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertain to rash driving, acts endangering life or personal safety, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and causing disappearance of evidence or providing false information to screen an offender. She has also been booked for allegedly tampering with evidence.
In her statement to the police, Makkar claimed she was in a panic after the accident and chose the GTB Nagar hospital because her children had been admitted there during Covid. However, a senior police officer stated that they are verifying if Makkar's father has connections with the hospital director.
Navjot Singh's father questioned why the accused took his son and daughter-in-law to a hospital so far away. Sandeep Kaur, the injured wife of the deceased, stated that they were returning home after visiting the Bangla Sahib Gurudwara and having lunch in RK Puram when the incident occurred.
Both Gaganpreet Makkar and her husband were also admitted to the Nulife Hospital after the accident, and Gaganpreet was taken into custody after being discharged. A Delhi court has remanded her to two days of judicial custody.
Police have seized both the BMW and the motorcycle involved in the accident. The crime scene was examined by forensic experts, and further investigation is underway. Police also noted that they did not receive a PCR call about the accident itself, but rather calls about a traffic snarl, discovering the accident upon arrival. The car is registered in the name of Makkar's husband.
