Dehradun, Uttarakhand, has been struck by a cloudburst, leading to flash floods and prompting rescue operations as of today, September 16, 2025. Initial reports indicate that at least two people are missing following the incident.

Cloudbursts and the resulting flash floods have been a recurring problem in Uttarakhand during the monsoon season. Just recently, on August 5, 2025, a similar incident in Uttarkashi district led to the deaths of at least four people and caused large-scale destruction in Dharali village. Homes, shops, and roads were swept away by the force of the floodwaters. Earlier in July 2025, a cloudburst in the Chamoli district damaged homes and crops, forcing residents to flee.

The increased frequency of these events has prompted serious concerns about the stability of infrastructure and settlements in the region. An inter-ministerial team has already been dispatched to Uttarakhand to assess the damage caused by the monsoon season, which includes surveying districts affected by flash floods and landslides. The team's evaluation will be crucial in determining the extent of the required relief and support from the central government. The state government has requested a special assistance package of Rs 5,702 crore from the Centre, earmarking a significant portion (Rs 3,758 crore) for slope stabilization and protection of vulnerable areas.

In August 2025, heavy rains caused havoc in Maldevta near Dehradun, with rising water levels in the Rispana, Song, Tons, and Bindal rivers. While the weather department denied reports of a cloudburst during that particular incident, the episode highlighted the vulnerability of the region to heavy rainfall and the potential for flash floods.

The current weather in Dehradun is mostly cloudy with a low chance of rain. However, the forecast predicts rain and thunderstorms in the coming days, underscoring the continued risk of further flooding and related incidents.
