Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 75th birthday, Gujarat government employees have set a new record by collecting over 56,000 units of blood in a single day. This achievement was part of a larger campaign, with mega blood donation camps organized across the state.
The blood donation drive was part of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) "Sewa Pakhwada" (service fortnight), a two-week celebration that includes various activities such as exhibitions, dialogues, and workshops that highlight Prime Minister Modi's contributions and vision for India. Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel inaugurated a blood donation camp in Gandhinagar, emphasizing the significance of the event coinciding with PM Modi's birthday on September 17. Over 1,27,000 state government employees registered to participate in the drive.
Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi commended the success of the drive, noting that 7,000 donations were made within the first hour. He also stressed the importance of the collected blood in assisting communities in Gujarat and neighboring regions.
In preparation for the blood donation drive, the Gujarat government revised school timings to allow teachers and staff to participate. The office of the deputy director of primary education directed all government primary schools to operate from 8 am to 11 am on September 16 to facilitate participation. District education officers, district primary education officers, and administrative authorities were instructed to notify schools and ensure compliance with the revised schedule. The government appealed to teachers to join the drive and "set an example of community service" through their contribution.
In addition to the blood donation drive, other events were organized to celebrate Prime Minister Modi's birthday. A mega blood donation camp was held at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, with an expected participation of over 20,000 people. Globally, approximately 7,500 camps were planned across 75 countries, aiming to collect around three lakh units of blood. The Prime Minister was scheduled to virtually inaugurate the nationwide initiative.
Furthermore, Surat planned to honor 6,000 sanitation workers to mark Prime Minister Modi's birthday. Union Minister CR Paatil highlighted Surat's achievement as the cleanest city in India and announced the program to honor the sanitation workers and their families.
The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) also organized a Mega Blood Donation Camp from June 1st to 15th, collecting over 1400 units of blood.
The blood donation drive and other initiatives demonstrate a collective effort to celebrate Prime Minister Modi's birthday through acts of service and community support.
