To maintain suspense and prevent spoilers for the third season of "The Summer I Turned Pretty," creator Jenny Han confirmed that they filmed fake scenes in Paris with Lola Tung (Belly) and Gavin Casalegno (Jeremiah). The goal was to mislead fans and encourage speculation about the ending of the series.
Han told Entertainment Weekly that filming fake scenes with Gavin in Paris was a way to keep surprises for the audience. She noted that in the current media landscape, it's challenging to keep plot details secret because people often see movies being filmed and share information, which diminishes the excitement.
Dedicated fans quickly shared videos of Tung and Casalegno filming together in Paris, which deviated from the books because Jeremiah never visits Belly in Paris. In fact, after they call off their wedding, the two do not interact in "We'll Always Have Summer," which serves as the inspiration for the third season. Many "Team Jeremiah" fans believed that Han had changed the story's ending and that Belly would not end up with Conrad (Christopher Briney).
Casalegno revealed that they filmed several fake scenes, including one where Jeremiah hugs Belly on a sidewalk, which went viral. Casalegno said it was fun to see people recording them from their balconies and felt like a "CIA agent". Han stated that they didn't write new scenes for the occasion but rather added to existing scenes while filming for convenience. According to Casalegno, some of the scenes they filmed were already part of episode 10, such as those involving the suitcase. He said that observant viewers might have noticed that the scenes were from episode 10 and not the finale.
Han appreciated Casalegno's willingness to deceive fans in order to keep the final season's developments a secret. Casalegno said he was happy to go to Paris for a week or two.
