High court judge to lead investigation into the death of Zubeen, forming an independent probe panel.

A judicial commission has been formed to investigate the death of Zubeen Garg, the iconic Assamese singer who died in Singapore on September 19, 2025. The commission will be headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia, a sitting judge of the Gauhati High Court. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the formation of the commission on Friday, October 3, 2025. The commission will be formally constituted on Saturday, October 4, 2025.

CM Sarma stated that this is the first time the state government has requested the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to appoint a sitting judge, rather than a retired one, to chair a judicial commission for a case of this magnitude. The Chief Justice approved the request and appointed Justice Saikia. CM Sarma expressed his gratitude to the Chief Justice and urged Zubeen Garg's fans to actively participate in the investigation by submitting affidavits to the commission.

The Chief Minister has appealed to the public to share any information, videos, or social media posts related to Zubeen Garg's death with the commission.

The announcement of the judicial commission comes amidst public outcry, speculation, and allegations of foul play surrounding Garg's death. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was previously formed, leading to the arrest of Garg's manager, Siddharth Sharma, festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, and band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta. The CID has taken custody of the accused for interrogation. The Assam CID has added murder charges against two prime accused in the case.

Zubeen Garg's wife, Garima Garg, has submitted a detailed statement and relevant documents to the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court, expressing her lack of knowledge about her husband being taken to Singapore and the yacht party. She also alleged that Zubeen's manager did not inform her about the planned trip. Her statement was recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC. The court is expected to examine these claims.

Shyamkanu Mahanta, the chief organizer of the Northeast India Festival, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking to transfer the probe from the state police's SIT to a central agency like the CBI or NIA. Mahanta, currently in CID custody on murder charges, claims he has been subjected to a "vicious media trial" and that Singaporean authorities found no foul play. According to the petition, over 54 FIRs have been filed against Mahanta across Assam and other northeastern states.

The Singapore autopsy report concluded that drowning was the cause of death and was shared with Garima Saikia Garg. A second autopsy is awaited at Gauhati Medical College for further clarity.

Zubeen Garg was scheduled to perform at the North East India Festival in Singapore. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax (I-T) Department are likely to join the probe to investigate alleged financial crimes linked to Shyamkanu Mahanta.
