Manish Malhotra, the celebrated designer, is venturing into film production with "Gustaakh Ishq," a romantic drama poised to offer a refreshing take on love. Starring Vijay Varma and Fatima Sana Shaikh in the lead, with veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah in a pivotal role, the film promises a departure from conventional romance, set against the backdrop of Old Delhi's poetic lanes.

Malhotra's Stage5 Production is backing "Gustaakh Ishq", marking his debut as a film producer alongside his brother Dinesh Malhotra. The film is directed by Vibhu Puri. Malhotra has described the film as a "daring story of love". He aims to revive the charm of classic, poetic love stories, emphasizing simplicity, soulful music, poetry, and "clean romance". Malhotra cited R.D. Burman and Gulzar as inspirations, believing contemporary cinema often lacks this purity.

"Gustaakh Ishq" tells the story of Nawabuddin (Vijay Varma), who seeks to learn the art of shayari from the renowned Urdu poet Ajiz (Naseeruddin Shah). During his stay, he finds himself drawn to Ajiz's daughter (Fatima Sana Shaikh), and a heartfelt romance blossoms. The trio shares moments over poetry and tea, but unforeseen events and misunderstandings test their bond. The trailer hints at the challenges and distance that arise between Vijay and Fatima's characters.

The film boasts music by Vishal Bhardwaj and lyrics by Gulzar, adding to its old-world charm. The soundtrack includes the songs "Ul Jalool Ishq," "Aap Iss Dhoop Mein," and "Sheher Tere". The film's visuals are crafted by cinematographer Manush Nandan, with sound design by Resul Pookutty.

The film was shot in Amritsar and Delhi, with filming commencing in January 2024 and concluding in March 2025. The film was initially titled "Ul Jalool Ishq". The first teaser was released in August 2025, offering a glimpse into the film's period romance. The trailer was launched on November 10, 2025, in Mumbai.

Manish Malhotra revealed that Vijay Varma and Fatima Sana Shaikh were his first choices for the lead roles. He wanted an unusual pairing and felt that Vijay, primarily known for intense roles, would be excellent in a romantic role, and Fatima would bring a fresh perspective as a heroine.

"Gustaakh Ishq" is scheduled to premiere at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 24, 2025, and will be released in theaters on November 28, 2025. The release date was initially set for November 21, but was later postponed.
