In a significant leadership transition, Shubman Gill has been named as India's new ODI captain, succeeding Rohit Sharma. The announcement, made on Saturday, October 4, 2025, marks a strategic move by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with an eye toward the 2027 World Cup. Gill, who already leads the Test side, will now helm both the ODI and Test teams, while also serving as the vice-captain in T20Is.
"Will be fully ready to win that World Cup," stated Shubman Gill in a video released by BCCI shortly after the announcement of him being named as the new ODI captain for the Indian Cricket team. Gill's appointment comes ahead of the ODI series against Australia, scheduled to begin on October 19. Despite the change in leadership, veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been included in the 15-member squad, ensuring a blend of experience and youthful vigor. Shreyas Iyer has been named as the vice-captain for the Australia ODIs.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed the rationale behind the decision, emphasizing the challenges of managing three different captains across formats. "It's practically impossible to have three different captains for the three formats in terms of planning and consistency," Agarkar explained. He also highlighted the importance of looking ahead to the next World Cup and giving the new captain ample time to prepare. Agarkar confirmed that Rohit Sharma was informed about the decision.
Rohit Sharma, who is 38 years old, led India to victory at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He is also the only captain other than MS Dhoni to lead India to three ICC white-ball finals. Gill, at 26, is over a decade younger than Sharma, signaling a significant shift in leadership. Gill's leadership skills are also evident in the IPL, where he captains the Gujarat Titans.
Gill's ascendancy to the ODI captaincy follows his successful stint as Test captain, which began earlier this year. He impressed with 754 runs in five Tests during India's 2-2 series draw in England. The BCCI released a video showcasing Gill's journey, highlighting his rise from Test captaincy to becoming the leader of the ODI team.
The decision to appoint Gill reflects a strategic vision focused on the future of Indian cricket. By entrusting him with the leadership role, the selectors aim to provide him with sufficient time to prepare for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
