Rajasthan sees a fourth probable death linked to cough syrup, raising concerns about medication safety.

The state of Rajasthan is grappling with a growing health crisis as reports emerge of a fourth death potentially linked to contaminated cough syrup. This incident follows the deaths of three other children in the past week, raising serious concerns about the quality and safety of medications distributed within the state.

The cough syrup in question contains dextromethorphan hydrobromide and is manufactured by Kaysons Pharma, a Jaipur-based pharmaceutical company. The syrup is distributed through various outlets under the Chief Minister's free medicine scheme.

The first reported case occurred in Sikar district, where a 5-year-old child died after consuming the syrup. Following this, two families from Bharatpur claimed that their children, both two years old, died in September after being given the same cough syrup at a government hospital in Weir. The latest reported death adds to the escalating concerns, although details surrounding this case are still emerging.

In response to the mounting crisis, the Rajasthan government has taken several actions. The distribution of cough syrups containing Dextromethorphan has been banned. Furthermore, the government has halted the distribution of all 19 types of medicines supplied by Kaysons Pharma until further notice. The state's Drug Controller, Rajaram Sharma, has been suspended for allegedly influencing the process of determining drug standards. An expert committee has also been formed to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, as directed by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma.

Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar has stated that the government hospitals did not prescribe the cough syrup allegedly linked to the deaths. He also claimed that the children who died were suffering from other illnesses and that the medicines have been tested and found to be appropriate. However, these claims are being met with skepticism and outrage from the families of the victims and the public.

Adding to the complexity, the Union health ministry has stated that samples collected from Madhya Pradesh did not contain diethylene glycol or ethylene glycol, toxins known to cause severe kidney damage. However, the cause of kidney failure in the affected children remains a mystery.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) held a protest in Jaipur, demanding the closure of Kaysons Pharma. Protesters raised slogans against the state government, accusing them of endangering children's lives.

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has initiated risk-based inspections of drug manufacturing units in several states. This action follows the deaths in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan allegedly due to contaminated cough syrups.

This incident has sparked a wider debate about the safety and regulation of pharmaceuticals, particularly those distributed through government schemes. Concerns have been raised about quality control, testing standards, and the potential for substandard or adulterated drugs to reach vulnerable populations. The government is now implementing stricter safety guidelines for Dextromethorphan and clear warning labels on harmful drugs. They are also introducing a new system that will clearly mention whether medicines are suitable for pregnant women and children.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on identifying the exact cause of these tragic deaths and implementing measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The families of the victims are demanding accountability and justice, while the public awaits answers and reassurance that the medications they rely on are safe and effective.
