The Vegas Golden Knights have officially secured their star center, Jack Eichel, for the long term, agreeing to an eight-year contract extension worth $108 million. The deal, confirmed on Wednesday, carries an average annual value of $13.5 million. This solidifies Eichel's position as a cornerstone of the franchise and signals the Golden Knights' continued commitment to Stanley Cup contention.
Eichel, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, has made it clear that he wanted to stay in Las Vegas. Last season, Eichel set franchise records in assists (66) and points (94). Now, the former second-overall pick and Mitch Marner are set to compete for another Stanley Cup.
The $13.5 million AAV places Eichel among the highest-paid players in the NHL. Eichel will have the third-highest cap hit in NHL history next season, trailing only Minnesota's Kirill Kaprizov ($17 million) and Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl ($14 million).
Eichel's journey to Las Vegas was marked by controversy and high expectations. The Golden Knights acquired him from the Buffalo Sabres on Nov. 4, 2021, in exchange for Alex Tuch, Peyton Krebs, and two draft picks. At the time, Eichel was in a dispute with Buffalo regarding the treatment of a neck injury. Vegas permitted Eichel to undergo artificial disk replacement surgery, a procedure that had never been performed on an NHL player at the time.
He played a critical role in helping the team hoist its first Stanley Cup in franchise history the following season. He recorded 26 points in 22 games and was very much in the running for the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
Since arriving in Vegas, Eichel has consistently produced at a point-per-game pace in both the regular season and playoffs. In 241 games with the Sabres and Golden Knights, Eichel has recorded 239 goals and 608 points.
The contract extension signifies the Golden Knights' belief in Eichel's ability to lead the team for years to come. Golden Knights fans can rejoice knowing that Eichel will remain in the city.
