Montreal Canadiens and Lane Hutson: Are Contractual Differences Delaying His Arrival in the NHL?

The Montreal Canadiens and star defenseman Lane Hutson, the reigning Calder Trophy winner, appear to be at a standstill in contract negotiations, leading to speculation about a potential "timeout" in discussions. With the 2025-26 NHL season underway, the Canadiens are keen to secure Hutson's future with the team, but both sides face hurdles in reaching an agreement.

Hutson is entering the final year of his entry-level contract and is set to become a restricted free agent (RFA) at the end of the season. As a 10.2(c) RFA, Hutson has limited leverage. He isn't eligible to receive an offer sheet or arbitration rights, meaning other teams can't easily swoop in and force the Canadiens' hand. However, his stellar performance speaks volumes, and both player and team are reportedly interested in a long-term deal.

According to various reports, the primary sticking point isn't the total dollar amount but rather the structure and associated financial implications. Hutson was reportedly willing to take an eight-year deal slightly less than Noah Dobson's $9.5 million average annual value (AAV), but the Canadiens didn't agree to it. The market has since been reset by Luke Hughes and Jackson LaCombe's deals.

One proposed solution involved a Canadian Retirement Compensation Arrangement (RCA) to lessen the tax burden on Hutson's contract, potentially allowing the Canadiens to keep the AAV lower. However, Hutson's camp reportedly disagreed with this approach. While the exact figures remain undisclosed, sources suggest the Canadiens were slightly below $9 million on an eight-year deal, while Hutson's side was slightly above that figure.

Adding another layer to the negotiation, there has been a change in Hutson's representation. TSN's Darren Dreger reported that a team of agents from Quartexx has taken over Hutson's file, with Ryan Barnes, the agency's Director of Operations in the United States, taking control, overseen by Darren Ferris. This change suggests the situation has become serious, with Hutson eager to resolve the contract extension saga.

General Manager Kent Hughes addressed concerns about the negotiations, stating that fans shouldn't worry, as Hutson won't be an unrestricted free agent for a long time. He also noted that the deals signed by Luke Hughes and Jackson LaCombe will impact Montreal's negotiation with Hutson. Hughes views Hughes' contract as a more relevant comparison than LaCombe's.

Some analysts believe Hutson's value to the Canadiens is immense, potentially exceeding that of Noah Dobson, and suggest his next contract should reflect that. Some suggest a contract in the $10.5 to $11.5 million AAV range.

Despite the challenges, there's optimism that a deal will eventually be reached. Hutson's talent is undeniable. Last season, he led all rookies with 66 points in 82 games, earning him the Calder Trophy. He also helped the Canadiens reach the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
