PM Modi expects Gor's leadership to deepen the India-US strategic alliance and enhance cooperation between both nations.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed his confidence that the tenure of US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor would significantly strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. The meeting in New Delhi marked the first high-level interaction between the two leaders since Gor's confirmation as the next American envoy to India.

Following the meeting, Gor conveyed to reporters that he had an "incredible meeting" with Prime Minister Modi where they engaged in discussions about various bilateral issues. These included matters of defense, trade, technology, and the importance of critical minerals.

PM Modi also shared his sentiments on X, stating, "Glad to receive Mr. Sergio Gor, Ambassador-designate of the US to India. I'm confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership". He also posted a photograph of himself and Gor holding a framed image from a joint press conference featuring PM Modi and US President Donald Trump, which took place earlier in the year at the White House. The photograph included a handwritten note and signature from President Trump, saying, "Mr Prime Minister, you are great!".

Gor emphasized the value the United States places on its relationship with India, stating that his visit underscored Washington's commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation. He highlighted President Trump's high regard for PM Modi, relaying that Trump considers Modi "a great and personal friend". According to Gor, President Trump and PM Modi had a productive phone call just before he departed for New Delhi, and he anticipates that such communication will continue in the coming weeks and months.

Earlier in the day, Gor met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss the India-US relationship and its increasing global significance, describing it as a unique strength in advancing bilateral ties. He also held meetings with NSA Ajit Doval, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

During his Senate confirmation hearing, Gor described the "deep friendship" between President Trump and PM Modi as a "unique strength" in advancing bilateral relations. He further acknowledged India as a strategic partner whose trajectory would shape the region and beyond. Gor stated that India's geographic position, economic growth, and military capabilities make it a cornerstone of regional stability and a critical component in promoting prosperity and advancing shared security interests between the two nations.

The US embassy is expected to formally announce Gor's presentation of credentials at a later date.
