Jammu & Kashmir assembly approves law university amidst political tensions and BJP's dual stance.

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has demonstrated its support for establishing a National Law University (NLU) in the region, amidst political tensions and regional disputes. The resolution, initially proposed by Congress legislator Nizammudin Bhat, sparked a debate about the university's location, with members advocating for different regions.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed the assembly, assuring members that the government is committed to the project and has already allocated ₹50 crore for it. He stated that the university is expected to begin operating by April 2026, with initial classes held in a temporary campus. Abdullah mentioned a potential site in Ompura, Budgam, which previously housed a software technological park, as a possible location for the temporary campus.

However, the Chief Minister's announcement regarding the location has stirred controversy. The BJP's candidate for the Budgam bypoll, Syed Mohsin, filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India, accusing Abdullah of violating the Model Code of Conduct by touting imminent university benefits in Ompura to sway voters. The BJP spokesperson alleged that the announcement was intended to influence the electorate by projecting developmental benefits in the constituency.

Inside the assembly, the BJP supported the resolution for the law university. However, outside the assembly, the party has been demanding the ouster of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. This demand highlights the ongoing political tug-of-war in the region, with the BJP seemingly attempting to destabilize the current government while simultaneously supporting initiatives aimed at improving education and development.

The National Conference (NC), the ruling party in Jammu and Kashmir, has also faced internal criticism. Another NC MP, Mian Altaf Ahmad, has recently criticized the party for not doing enough to address the political issues in J&K. This criticism follows similar concerns raised by Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, highlighting a growing sense of dissatisfaction within the party.

The BJP has also accused Omar Abdullah and his family of dynastic politics, alleging that they have failed to empower the people of Jammu and Kashmir. BJP Spokesperson Dr. Abhijeet Jasrotia stated that the NC has historically used Muslims as vote banks without delivering real empowerment.

Despite the political disagreements, the resolution for the National Law University signifies a commitment to improving legal education and research in Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Minister Abdullah emphasized that the university would provide opportunities for students from Jammu and Kashmir to study law within the region, reducing the need to go elsewhere. He also expressed gratitude to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh for establishing two central universities in Jammu and Kashmir, demonstrating a commitment to education in the region.

The establishment of the National Law University has faced some obstacles, including finding a suitable location for the permanent campus and addressing concerns raised by the Indian Air Force regarding the Ompura site. However, the passage of the resolution in the Legislative Assembly indicates a strong desire to move forward with the project and provide better educational opportunities for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
