A prominent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, Nitin Nanda, was shot on Wednesday in Agampur village, Rupnagar district, Punjab. The assailant is suspected to be Dilsher Singh, a former Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) from Chandigarh. Following the incident, Singh is reportedly on the run.
The incident occurred while Nanda was attending a local event in Agampur village near Anandpur Sahib. Initial reports suggest a heated argument preceded the shooting, stemming from a long-standing property dispute between Nanda and Singh. During the altercation, Dilsher Singh allegedly drew his licensed revolver and fired at Nanda.
One bullet struck Nanda in the back of the head. After the shooting, Nanda was immediately rushed to Anandpur Sahib Civil Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh for advanced treatment. His condition was initially reported as stable.
Local authorities have launched a manhunt to apprehend Dilsher Singh and his accomplices. Checkpoints have been set up throughout the district, and raids are being conducted to locate the accused. Police have registered a case of attempt to murder against Dilsher Singh.
Nitin Nanda had previously been associated with Shiv Sena before joining the Aam Aadmi Party. Ropar SSP Gulneet Singh Khurana confirmed the longstanding enmity and property dispute as the likely motive behind the attack.
Punjab Education Minister and Anandpur Sahib MLA Harjot Singh Bains has spoken with the Director of PGIMER to ensure Nanda receives the best possible medical care.
The incident has sparked concern in the region, prompting a swift response from law enforcement and political figures. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities actively pursuing the apprehension of the former DSP and determining the full extent of the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
