"No Need For Media Or People In Congress To Search For A Leader: DK Shivakumar"
Bengaluru, Karnataka - In a recent statement, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar asserted there is no need for the media or individuals within the Congress party to seek out a leader, implying a clear and present leadership within the party. Shivakumar's declaration comes amidst speculation and reports of his ambition to become Chief Minister, potentially succeeding Siddaramaiah.
Shivakumar, who also serves as the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), has been a prominent figure in Karnataka politics for decades. He has been elected as an MLA eight times, representing both the Sathanur and Kanakapura constituencies. He is currently the Minister of Water Resources, Bengaluru Development and Town Planning, and Bengaluru Urban District In-charge.
Recent reports have suggested that Shivakumar has expressed his desire to be elevated to the Chief Minister's position to the Congress high command, with rumored dates of November 21 or 26 being circulated. These speculations arose after Shivakumar reportedly consulted with his personal astrologers, who advised him that it was the opportune moment for such a move.
However, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah appeared to be annoyed when questioned about these reports, asking reporters how they obtained such information. Despite the rumors, some ministers within Siddaramaiah's cabinet have dismissed the possibility of a change in leadership in November.
Shivakumar himself has refrained from directly addressing the speculations but has maintained that he would abide by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's word. His brother, D.K. Suresh, a former MP, stated that Shivakumar would become Chief Minister if it was his destiny. "If it is written on his forehead, he will become the Chief Minister. Otherwise, he will not. Why should we bother about it? He will continue as the KPCC president as per the high command wish," Suresh said.
The political atmosphere in Karnataka has been somewhat tense, with supporters of Siddaramaiah backing him to complete his term, while some MLAs are reportedly pushing for Shivakumar's elevation. Adding to the mix, members of Ahinda Organisations (Minorities, Backward Classes, and Dalits) staged a protest in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah's native place, demanding that the Congress high command allow Siddaramaiah to continue for the remaining term.
In other news, Shivakumar has been actively involved in addressing Bengaluru's infrastructure and development issues. He recently objected to "constant criticism" regarding Bengaluru's potholes, citing significant funds allocated for road repair. He has also been engaged in discussions regarding the proposed tunnel road project in Bengaluru, with BJP MP Tejasvi Surya criticizing the project and proposing alternative solutions. Shivakumar has emphasized that decisions regarding such projects must align with funding availability.
Shivakumar's political journey has not been without controversy. He has faced allegations of corruption and money laundering, and was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in 2017, though later released on bail. Despite these challenges, he remains a significant figure in the Indian National Congress and a popular leader in Karnataka.
