Pahalgam Cable Car Project Gets NIA Approval, Tourism Set for a Boost
In a move set to revitalize tourism in Jammu and Kashmir, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has granted its approval for the construction of a cable car project in Pahalgam. This decision comes despite a recent terror attack in the Baisaran area, where the project is planned. The Jammu and Kashmir government sought the NIA's clearance to ensure no objections from an investigative standpoint, which the agency has now provided.
The proposed 1.4 km gondola project, estimated to cost between Rs 100-120 crore, aims to connect Yatri Niwas to Baisaran, a scenic meadow also known as 'Mini Switzerland'. This development is expected to significantly boost footfall and economic activity in the south Kashmir hill circuit. The project has been stalled due to security concerns following the April 22 attack that resulted in the deaths of 26 people, including tourists. The government is keen to revive tourism and restore visitor confidence in the region.
The Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC) had previously finalized the alignment for the gondola and awarded tenders for consultancy and DPR (Detailed Project Report) preparation. An agreement has been signed with Ronmas India Pvt. Ltd, the executing agency. However, site work has remained on hold pending security clearance. With the NIA's approval, the agency is now seeking permission to visit the site to conduct topographical and geo-technical studies. Work is expected to commence immediately after the necessary permissions are granted, with an estimated completion time of 18 months.
The cable car project is designed to offer tourists an easy and scenic ride to Baisaran, reducing congestion at Gulmarg by offering an alternative adventure site. Local authorities and stakeholders describe the gondola project as a "game-changer" for Pahalgam. It is expected to establish Pahalgam as a premier destination for both summer and winter activities. In addition to the cable car, there are also plans to install a ski drag lift at the nearby Aru valley to promote winter tourism in the area.
The project has been designed with environmental sustainability in mind, ensuring no deforestation during construction. The Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation (JKTDC) plays a crucial role in promoting tourism in the region by managing hotels and providing transport facilities. The corporation has been working to expedite the necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from forest and other concerned departments.
The surge in tourist footfall highlights the region's growing stability. During January–June 2025, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed over 95 lakh domestic tourist visits and 19,570 foreign tourist visits. The Ministry of Tourism continues to promote Jammu and Kashmir as a priority destination under various central schemes and campaigns. In the past two years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed an unprecedented surge in tourism, with over 40 million visitors. The region has also emerged as one of the prime film-shooting destinations in the country. The completion of the cable car project is expected to further boost tourism, attracting adventure enthusiasts and hosting potential sporting events in the future.
