Significant strides: Indian women achieving milestones and making history in diverse fields.

India is witnessing a transformative period for its women, marked by significant strides in various sectors. This progress is driven by a combination of government initiatives, evolving societal norms, and the resilience and determination of Indian women themselves.

Political Empowerment

A landmark achievement is the passage of the Women's Reservation Act in September 2023, which mandates reserving 33% of seats for women in the Lok Sabha (lower house of Parliament), state legislative assemblies, and the Delhi Legislative Assembly. While implementation is expected after the next census and delimitation exercise, this act holds the potential to significantly increase women's representation in politics. Currently, women constitute approximately 14% of Lok Sabha members and 9% of state assemblies. This reservation aims to address the historical underrepresentation of women in Indian politics, where traditional gender norms, safety concerns, and discrimination within political parties have been barriers.

Economic Advancement

India is recognizing the immense potential of women entrepreneurs. KPMG reported that India has the potential to create over 30 million new women-owned enterprises, generating 150 to 170 million jobs. However, women-led businesses face an unmet credit gap. To address this, various schemes support women entrepreneurs and workers, including the PM Jan Dhan Yojana (which has opened crores of accounts, with a significant percentage belonging to women), the Stand-Up India Scheme (sanctioning loans to women entrepreneurs), and the MUDRA Scheme (directing microloans toward women-led enterprises). Furthermore, the government in Delhi has announced the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana to provide financial assistance to women from economically weaker sections.

Corporate Leadership

While the trend line for women's leadership in corporate India is rising, progress is slow. Women hold approximately 20% of board roles, and only about 5% of CEO positions. Nevertheless, there are inspiring examples of women breaking barriers, such as Priya Nair becoming the first female MD and CEO of Hindustan Unilever in July 2025. House of Rose Professional identifies India's Most Inspirational Women in Leadership, acknowledging those who are shaping greater gender balance and enabling business success. To promote women's participation in the workforce, India has been tuning its legal and regulatory landscape. The Ministry of Women and Child Development launched the SHe-Box portal, a centralized platform for registering and monitoring sexual harassment complaints. State-specific legal reforms are also addressing gender equality, including the employment of women in night shifts.

Social and Cultural Shifts

Initiatives like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao are driving a cultural transformation by dismantling gender biases and ensuring girls' right to education. The campaign "Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan" (Healthy Woman, Empowered Family) aims to improve women's health and nutrition. Moreover, the victory of the Indian women's cricket team in the ICC World Cup is seen as a testament to women's empowerment in the country.

Challenges and the Way Forward

Despite the progress, challenges remain. India ranks low globally in terms of women's economic participation and opportunities. The World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report indicates that it may take over a century to achieve full gender parity at the current pace. Structural inequities, discriminatory social norms, and gender-based violence continue to hinder gains. To accelerate progress, India needs to implement comprehensive skill development programs for women, enhance gender-sensitive labor laws, and strengthen political empowerment through local leadership initiatives. Addressing societal attitudes and ensuring the effective implementation of laws protecting women are also crucial.

By addressing these challenges and building on the existing momentum, India can unlock the full potential of its women and achieve a truly equitable and prosperous society.
