Harmanpreet Kaur Declares Women's World Cup Trophy Stays in India After Presidential Felicitation.

New Delhi, November 6, 2025 – The Indian women's cricket team, fresh off their historic ICC Women's World Cup 2025 victory, were felicitated by President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan today. The President congratulated the team on their unprecedented achievement, acknowledging their remarkable performance and the inspiration they have provided to the younger generation.

During the ceremony, Captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed the team's determination to keep the trophy in India, stating, "This trophy won't leave India". Kaur also presented President Murmu with a signed World Cup-winning jersey.

President Murmu lauded the team's unity, determination, and their role in inspiring young girls across the country. She also commended the coaches and support staff for their contribution to this historic triumph. She noted that the team reflects India, representing different regions, social backgrounds and circumstances, united as one.

The President had previously congratulated the team immediately after their victory, calling it a "watershed moment" for women's cricket in India. In a post on X, she wrote, "My heartiest congratulations to each and every member of the Indian women's cricket team on winning the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025! They have created history by winning it for the first time…I admire the way the girls have done India proud”.

The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final at the DY Patil Cricket Stadium in Navi Mumbai to lift their first-ever ICC trophy. This victory marked a significant milestone, making them only the fourth team, after Australia, England, and New Zealand, to win the coveted title. En route to the final, the team overcame significant challenges, including a semi-final victory against the seven-time world champions, Australia.

The team's journey to the World Cup was marked by dedication and perseverance. Kaur reflected on her childhood dream of winning the World Cup, stating, "Ever since, as a kid, I started getting a sense of what likes and dislikes are, I've always seen a bat in my hand... Whenever we used to watch a match on TV, or watch India play, or watch the World Cup, I used to think, I need an opportunity like this". She emphasized the importance of never stopping dreaming, adding, "You never know where your destiny will take you".

The team had previously met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence. The Prime Minister congratulated the team and lauded their historic achievement. He had also praised their performance immediately after the win, acknowledging their skill, confidence, exceptional teamwork and tenacity.

Vice Captain Smriti Mandhana thanked the Prime Minister for his constant support and inspiration, recalling his encouraging words from a 2017 meeting. Jemimah Rodrigues highlighted the team's resilience and ability to bounce back from setbacks.

The Indian women's cricket team's World Cup victory is a momentous occasion that has sparked immense celebrations across the nation and promises to inspire future generations of cricketers.
