Karnataka CM Retorts: Vijayan's "Bulldozer Justice" Claim is Politically Charged, Misrepresenting North Indian States.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has strongly criticized Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's remarks concerning the recent eviction drive in Bengaluru. Vijayan had described the action as "North Indian bulldozer justice," a comment that has sparked a heated exchange between the two leaders. Siddaramaiah refuted the claim, calling it "politically motivated" and stating that it lacks understanding of the factual situation.

The controversy stems from the demolition of structures in Fakir Colony and Waseem Layout, located in the Yelahanka area of Bengaluru. These areas were reportedly occupied by Muslim families for several years. Vijayan condemned the demolition, characterizing it as an example of "anti-minority aggressive politics" reminiscent of the "Sangh Parivar" in North India. He questioned the Congress-led Karnataka government's decision to carry out forced evictions instead of ensuring housing for the poor. He also expressed shock that a Congress administration would resort to such actions.

Siddaramaiah defended the eviction drive, asserting that it was a lawful removal of illegal encroachments on government land. He emphasized that the affected area, a waste-disposal site in Kogilu Layout, was unsuitable for human habitation. According to Siddaramaiah, the residents had been issued multiple notices to relocate but failed to comply. He stated that under the circumstances, clearing the encroachment became unavoidable. He also assured that temporary shelter, food, and other essential facilities would be arranged for those affected.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar also weighed in on the issue, advising Pinarayi Vijayan not to interfere in Karnataka's internal affairs. Shivakumar dismissed Vijayan's remarks as "political gimmicks" ahead of elections. He clarified that the evicted location was a quarry pit designated for garbage dumping a decade ago and posed serious health hazards. Shivakumar denied the use of bulldozers, stating that the administration had simply vacated a public space and was protecting government land from land mafia. He assured that residents with valid documents and those originally from Karnataka would receive assistance and be rehabilitated under the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Scheme.

The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of marginalized communities and the role of state governments in providing housing and ensuring fair treatment under the law. While the Karnataka government insists the eviction was a necessary legal measure, critics argue that it reflects a disregard for the rights and well-being of vulnerable populations. The exchange between the two Chief Ministers highlights the political sensitivities surrounding such issues and the potential for inter-state tensions to arise.
