Delhi Fire Service Responded to Over 4 Lakh Emergency Calls in 15 Years
Over the past 15 years, the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) has been a crucial lifeline for the capital, responding to over 4 lakh emergency calls. These calls encompass a range of incidents, including fires, building collapses, and road crashes. While the DFS has worked tirelessly to protect the citizens of Delhi, official data reveals that 6,611 people have lost their lives in these incidents during this period.
The data, compiled up to 2024, highlights the immense pressure on the DFS and the challenges of ensuring safety in a rapidly growing urban environment. The number of emergency calls has fluctuated over the years, with the lowest count recorded in the 2011-12 fiscal year at 18,143. However, the highest number of calls was registered in 2022-23, reaching 31,958, indicating a significant increase in emergency incidents.
Fatalities saw a troubling rise, particularly after 2020, nearly doubling by 2023-24, when they peaked at 1,303. In contrast, the lowest number of injuries was reported in 2010-11, with 243 individuals affected. The highest number of injuries occurred in 2023-24, with 3,232 people sustaining injuries in various mishaps. Despite the grim statistics, Delhi Fire Service officials have not attributed the increased incidents to any specific reason, citing unexpected occurrences often beyond control.
The DFS operates 66 fire stations across Delhi, managing fires of varying severity, from minor incidents to major conflagrations that demand extensive resources. Notable incidents include the Mundka commercial fire in 2022 and the Anaj Mandi blaze in 2019, both of which underscored the persistent challenges of maintaining safety standards amidst rapid urban development.
The Delhi Fire Service remains committed to safeguarding the lives and property of Delhi residents. The service consistently works to improve its response times, enhance its equipment, and conduct public awareness campaigns to prevent fires and other emergencies.
