Dr. Shaheen Shahid, a suspended lecturer from Kanpur's Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College, has emerged as a central figure in the ongoing investigation into the Delhi blast and a terror module bust in Faridabad. Her alleged involvement has sent shockwaves through the college, with faculty and staff expressing disbelief.
Dr. Shahid's professional life took an abrupt turn when she went on unauthorized leave in 2013 and never returned to GSVM Medical College. The Uttar Pradesh government formally terminated her employment in 2021 due to prolonged absenteeism. Before her dismissal, she worked as a lecturer in Pharmacology from 2006 to 2013. During this time, she briefly worked at Kannauj Medical College in 2009-2010 before returning to GSVM.
Investigating agencies are meticulously reviewing Dr. Shahid's academic records, connections, and past movements. The state government has requested official documents related to her tenure at the college. According to GSVM records, Dr. Shahid is originally from Lucknow. She attended Lalbagh Girls' Inter College and completed her MBBS in 2003 from Prayagraj Medical College and MD in 2005.
According to Delhi Police, Dr. Shaheen Shahid was entrusted with establishing the Indian branch of Jaish-e-Mohammed's (JeM) women's wing, Jamaat-ul-Mominaat, which operates under the leadership of Sadia Azhar, sister of JeM founder Masood Azhar. Sadia's husband, Yusuf Azhar, a key conspirator in the Kandahar hijacking, was killed in Operation Sindoor.
Dr. Shahid was also reportedly associated with Al-Falah University and maintained close links with Dr. Muzammil Ganaie from Pulwama, another suspect arrested after a large quantity of explosives was recovered from his rented accommodation in Faridabad. Police indicated that her Maruti Swift, bearing a Faridabad registration number, was used to store weapons and ammunition. A Russian assault rifle and live cartridges were recovered from a car registered in her name. She was arrested in Faridabad.
Colleagues described her as brilliant but withdrawn. She lived in Room 29, L Block at the medical college. Following her dismissal in 2021, she divorced eye doctor Dr. Zafar in 2015. Even after her long stay at the college, she had no close links with professors from her department or other departments.
Dr. Shahid's father in Lucknow expressed shock and disbelief, stating that his daughter spent her life serving people and he doesn't believe she could be involved in any wrongdoing.
The NIA has formally taken over the case as probe agencies focus on the multi-state terror network unearthed after the recent Red Fort car blast in Delhi.
