Mumbai hotel fire: Quick response prevents injuries, highlighting fire safety protocols.

Mumbai, India – A fire broke out at the Fairmont Hotel near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 2 in Vile Parle (East) on Saturday evening, February 22, 2025. The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) classified the incident as a Level 1, minor fire.

The fire was reported at approximately 5:30 PM and was extinguished by 6:50 PM. According to fire officials, the blaze was confined to the air conditioning unit and exhaust ducting on the terrace of the 10-story hotel, affecting an area of roughly 1,000 to 1,500 square feet. The hotel also has three basement levels and a ground floor.

Upon receiving the fire alarm, the MFB dispatched three fire engines and three jumbo tankers to the scene. Firefighters, in coordination with hotel staff, promptly evacuated approximately 70 to 80 guests and staff members who were on different floors of the hotel, using the staircase.

Visuals from the scene showed thick, black plumes of smoke emanating from the hotel's terrace, which was visible from the Mumbai air traffic control. Although the incident occurred near the airport, authorities confirmed that flight operations were not affected.

Officials stated the fire originated from electrical cables of the fresh air intake unit and exhaust units on the terrace. There were several units, and the malfunctioning of the fans could have likely caused the fire. Smoke from the terrace was coming down to the floors.

The fire was doused at 2:10 pm. People stranded on the upper floors of the ground-plus-five-story building were rescued by fire brigade personnel and brought down through the staircase.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the fire. Cooling operations were performed by the Mumbai Fire Brigade.
