The IPL 2026 retention deadline day has delivered a series of shockwaves, leaving fans and analysts alike reeling from unexpected trades, surprising releases, and the apparent end of significant eras for some of the league's biggest franchises. As teams finalized their squads ahead of the upcoming mega auction, several blockbuster moves signaled a dramatic shift in team dynamics and strategies.
One of the most stunning developments was Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) complete overhaul, highlighted by trading Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to Rajasthan Royals (RR) in exchange for Sanju Samson. This move marks the end of Jadeja's decade-long stint with CSK, where he was instrumental in three IPL title victories. Managing Director of CSK, Kasi Viswanathan, acknowledged the difficulty of parting ways with Jadeja, emphasizing the franchise's need for a top-order Indian batsman. CSK also released Matheesha Pathirana, Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra. Despite the changes, CSK has confirmed that Ruturaj Gaikwad will continue to captain the team.
Meanwhile, RR also traded Nitish Rana to Delhi Capitals (DC). To fill the gaps, RR brought in Donovan Ferreira from DC. RR has retained its strong Indian core, including Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag, along with key overseas players like Jofra Archer.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) also made headlines by releasing Andre Russell and Venkatesh Iyer. Iyer, who was bought for a hefty sum last year, was let go along with other notable names like Quinton de Kock and Anrich Nortje. KKR's decision to release Russell, a long-time powerhouse for the team, signals a significant shift in their strategy.
In other trades, Mohammed Shami will join Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Arjun Tendulkar has also moved from Mumbai Indians (MI) to LSG. MI re-signed leg-spinner Mayank Markande from KKR. Shardul Thakur was traded to MI as well.
Gujarat Titans (GT) have confirmed their list of retained players, with Shubman Gill, Rashid Khan and Sai Sudharsan remaining central to their plans. GT released Gerald Coetzee, Karim Janat, Mahipal Lomror, Dasun Shanaka and Kulwant Khejroliya.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) are expected to retain most of their squad, but Glenn Maxwell is likely to be released. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have decided to retain Heinrich Klaasen while releasing Adam Zampa and Rahul Chahar.
These retention and trade decisions have significantly impacted the purse available for each franchise heading into the IPL 2026 auction. KKR has the highest available purse at ₹64.3 crore, followed by CSK with ₹43.4 crore. MI has the smallest purse, with only ₹2.75 crore remaining. The IPL 2026 auction is scheduled for December 16, 2025, in Abu Dhabi.
The IPL 2026 season promises to be one of the most unpredictable and exciting yet, with several teams undergoing major transformations. These changes are expected to create new opportunities for emerging talents and spark intense competition among the franchises.
