The internet is abuzz following S.S. Rajamouli's grand reveal of his next cinematic venture, "Varanasi," starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The announcement, made at a massive fan event called 'Globetrotter' at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad on Saturday, November 15, 2025, drew over 50,000 fans and was live-streamed on JioHotstar.
Rajamouli's "Varanasi" marks his next project after the globally acclaimed "RRR," which won an Oscar for the song "Naatu Naatu". The film is slated for a worldwide release in January 2027, coinciding with the festival of Sankranti.
The first glimpse of "Varanasi" promises a visually stunning, globe-trotting adventure rooted in Indian mythology. While plot details remain under wraps, a nearly four-minute video showcased at the event revealed a time-travel narrative drawing inspiration from Hindu mythology. The film's title is derived from the Indian city of Varanasi, considered Hinduism's spiritual center.
Mahesh Babu plays the lead role of Rudra, an archaeologist embarking on a global adventure through jungles in the Amazon and Africa. A teaser showed Babu as a fierce warrior covered in blood, riding a white bull and wielding a trident. Industry sources describe the story as that of an archeologist inspired by Indian mythology. His character is reportedly modeled after African folklore heroes and classic Hollywood adventurers like Indiana Jones.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas returns to Indian cinema after several Hollywood projects, portraying the character Mandakini. Her first look features her in a mustard sari, balancing on a cliff edge with a pistol in hand. Rajamouli welcomed Chopra Jonas, acknowledging her impact on Indian cinema globally and expressing excitement for audiences to witness her portrayal of Mandakini. Chopra Jonas described her character as "more than what meets the eye".
Prithviraj Sukumaran is cast as the antagonist, Kumbha, described as a sharp and scientific-minded villain. Rajamouli praised Sukumaran as one of the finest actors he has worked with, appreciating his portrayal of the "sinister, ruthless, powerful antagonist".
The "Globetrotter" event featured a massive 130 ft x 100 ft screen for the teaser showcase. A clip of Mahesh Babu riding a bull with a trident has gone viral, dominating mythological conversations in Indian cinema.
Rajamouli intends for "Varanasi" to be projected in IMAX format. The film's puja ceremony was held in January, with shooting taking place in Kenya, Odisha, and Hyderabad.
