BJP Demands Explanation from Congress Regarding Alleged Misappropriation of Funds in the National Herald Case.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its criticism of the Indian National Congress (INC) regarding the National Herald case, demanding that the opposition party provide a detailed account of what the BJP refers to as the "loot" allegedly committed by Congress leaders. This demand follows the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) by the Delhi Police against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in connection with the case.

The Congress party has retaliated by accusing the BJP of engaging in "vendetta politics" and using the case to harass and intimidate its leaders. The Congress maintains that the National Herald case is entirely fabricated and that justice will ultimately prevail.

Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad dismissed the Congress's allegations as baseless. Prasad stated that the initial complaint in the matter was filed in 2008, before Narendra Modi became Prime Minister. He further explained that the Delhi Police's Crime Branch filed the FIR after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) requested it, based on findings from its investigation into the case.

Prasad elaborated on the allegations, stating that the entire shareholding of the Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the publisher of the National Herald newspaper, was transferred to a new company called Young Indian for a mere ₹50 lakh. He said that a majority stake, 76 percent, in Young Indian allegedly went to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. Additionally, the BJP leader claimed that the Gandhis also became owners of the National Herald's properties in various cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Lucknow, worth crores of rupees.

"This is a clear case of loot," Prasad asserted. He questioned how the Congress leaders could allegedly commit such "loot" and become owners of valuable properties through fraudulent means, and then claim to be victims of political targeting. He added that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have been charged under section 120 (B) for criminal conspiracy and Section 420 of the old penal code.

In April 2025, after the ED filed a chargesheet against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and others in the National Herald case, the BJP accused the Congress leaders of playing the "victim card" after indulging in the "loot" of public money. The BJP stated that those who engaged in corruption and misappropriation of public assets would be held accountable. The ruling party further argued that the proceedings in the case began on the order of the court, dismissing the Congress's claims of vendetta politics.
