Remembering the brave: PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi honor Parliament attack heroes on anniversary.

New Delhi: The nation today observed the 24th anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack, with leaders across the political spectrum paying heartfelt tributes to the security personnel who lost their lives defending the nation's democratic heart.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the commemorations, offering floral tributes at Parliament House to honor the fallen heroes. He was joined by Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, who is also the Rajya Sabha Chair, and other Members of Parliament in paying respects to those who died fending off the terrorists.

The solemn ceremony, held outside the old Parliament building, commenced with a salute by the CISF personnel, followed by a moment of silence to honor the memory of the bravehearts. The CRPF, which previously offered 'salami shastra', discontinued the practice after 2023.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, along with his mother Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were also present to pay their respects. Union ministers Kiren Rijiju, Jitendra Singh, and Arjun Ram Meghwal were also in attendance.

Remembering the Courageous

On December 13, 2001, five heavily armed terrorists attacked the Parliament House, aiming to strike at the core of Indian democracy. The attack was foiled by the bravery and sacrifice of the security personnel from the Parliament Security Service, CRPF, and Delhi Police. All five terrorists were killed in the forecourt of the building.

In total, ten people lost their lives in the attack, including six personnel from the Delhi Police, two from the Parliament Security Service, a gardener, and a TV video journalist.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also paid tribute to the fallen heroes, stating that their heroism and selfless service will continue to inspire every Indian.

The 2001 Parliament attack remains a stark reminder of the threats faced by the nation and the unwavering resolve of its security forces to protect its sovereignty and democratic values. The tributes paid today serve as a testament to the nation's gratitude and remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
