Indian Armed Forces Strengthen Arsenal: Army Receives Apache Helicopters, Navy Welcomes Seahawks for Enhanced Capabilities

In a move to significantly bolster its air capabilities, the Indian armed forces are set to receive new additions to their fleets. The Indian Army has inducted three Apache AH-64E attack helicopters, while the Indian Navy is preparing to commission a second MH-60R Seahawk squadron. These acquisitions mark a significant step in the modernization and enhancement of India's defense capabilities, particularly in strategic maritime and land operations.

The Indian Army received its first batch of Apache AH-64E attack helicopters on July 21, 2025, at the Hindon Airbase. These helicopters, manufactured by Boeing, will be deployed to the Army Aviation Corps base in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. This acquisition marks the first time the Indian Army will have its own fleet of Apache helicopters. The Indian Air Force (IAF) already operates 22 Apache helicopters. The remaining three helicopters from the deal are expected to arrive before the end of the year.

The AH-64E Apache is known as the "tank killer helicopter" and is powered by General Electric T700-701 or T700-701C engines, with the latest versions using the T700-701D. It features a longbow fire control radar and is armed with an M230 30mm chain gun and AGM-114 Hellfire missiles. The Apache is designed for various combat scenarios, including operations in difficult terrains and forward areas. It can also control drones, enhancing its operational capabilities.

The Indian Navy is scheduled to commission its second MH-60R Seahawk helicopter squadron, INAS 335 (Ospreys), on December 17, 2025, at INS Hansa in Goa. Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, will attend the formal induction ceremony. The MH-60R Sea Hawks are equipped with advanced sensors, avionics, and weapon systems, enhancing maritime domain awareness and combat readiness in the Indian Ocean Region.

The MH-60R Seahawk is a multi-mission maritime helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft, a Lockheed Martin company. It is capable of advanced long-range target detection, anti-submarine warfare with sonobuoys and torpedoes, anti-surface warfare, and search and rescue operations. The commissioning of INAS 335 is expected to significantly boost the Navy's aviation capabilities and ensure operational preparedness in a complex maritime security landscape.

These acquisitions of Apache attack helicopters and Seahawk squadrons represent a concerted effort to modernize the Indian armed forces and enhance their capabilities to address evolving security challenges. The addition of these advanced platforms will provide a significant boost to both the Army and Navy, strengthening India's defense posture and its ability to safeguard its strategic interests in the region.
