Following his visit to Kolkata on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken to social media platform X to address concerns regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and voter identification, while also targeting the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the Lionel Messi event controversy and alleged infiltration from Bangladesh.
In a post on Saturday, Modi stated that weather conditions prevented him from attending a planned rally in Nadia district. He assured the Matua and Namasudra communities that they would be served and have the right to live in India with dignity because of the CAA. Modi added that the government would do even more for these communities once the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) forms a government in Bengal. The Prime Minister targeted Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the chaos at Salt Lake Stadium during Lionel Messi's visit and infiltration from Bangladesh.
Modi also criticized the TMC regarding the mismanagement of Lionel Messi's recent visit to Kolkata. He stated that West Bengal was shamed due to the TMC and that the incident broke the hearts of many football-loving youths. The Prime Minister accused TMC of shielding infiltrators and alleged their supporters say "Modi Go Back" but remain silent on "Infiltrators Go Back".
The BJP has been actively criticizing the TMC, with BJP leader Shankudev Panda demanding an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into the Messi event, alleging misuse of public money and illegal money circulation. The Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has called for a court-monitored investigation and the arrest of TMC ministers Aroop Biswas and Sujit Bose, also demanding refunds for exorbitant ticket prices.
The TMC has retaliated to these allegations. Derek O'Brien, a Rajya Sabha member, responded to Modi's comments by saying that Modi forgot his script and is now trying to do damage control. TMC MP Saugata Roy said that the Chief Minister has appointed an inquiry committee and condemned the BJP for bringing politics into a sports event. The TMC also alleged that Modi's speech at the Taherpur rally showed a lack of concern for the Matuas, who are facing uncertainties over the deletion of names post the publication of draft electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh claimed that Modi did not address the concerns of the Matuas and remained silent on the deportation of Indian citizens by BJP-ruled states.
Earlier on Saturday, addressing a gathering in Nadia district, Modi attacked the TMC, comparing the situation in West Bengal to "maha jungle raj" and alleging that corruption and nepotism have hindered development in the state. He also claimed that the TMC is opposing SIR to save infiltrators and spreading false narratives to scare refugees.
The political atmosphere in West Bengal is heating up, with the BJP accusing the TMC of corruption, appeasement politics and mismanagement, while the TMC is countering these allegations and raising concerns about the BJP's policies and actions. The upcoming elections in 2026 are expected to be fiercely contested, with both parties vying for the support of various communities and addressing issues such as citizenship, development, and governance.
