Bangladeshi Ambassador in India Called Back to Dhaka Immediately: Reports Suggest Unspecified Urgency

Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India, M. Reaz Hamidullah, has been urgently summoned to Dhaka amid reports of strained bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India. According to the mass-circulation daily Prothom Alo, Hamidullah arrived in Dhaka on Monday night following the summons from the foreign ministry.

The "urgent call" from Dhaka has been linked to the "recent situation in bilateral ties with India". Sources within the foreign office indicated that Hamidullah's visit is intended for discussions regarding these recent developments.

This diplomatic activity occurs in the wake of rising tensions. On Tuesday, December 23, 2025, Bangladesh summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to formally register "grave concern" regarding the security of Bangladeshi diplomatic missions and facilities in India, in response to protests and acts of vandalism. Dhaka has requested that Indian authorities arrest and extradite those accused of these acts if they are found to have crossed into Indian territory.

The incidents that prompted Bangladesh's concern include those of December 20, 2025, at the Bangladesh High Commission and the ambassador's residence in New Delhi, and on December 22, 2025, at the Bangladesh Visa Centre in Siliguri. Dhaka has described these incidents as "premeditated acts of violence and intimidation".

In response to the unrest, Bangladesh has suspended consular and visa services at its High Commission in New Delhi. The Indian Visa Application Centre in Chattogram has also temporarily halted operations, citing security concerns.

Earlier in December, India summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner to India M. Riaz Hamidullah, citing concerns over the security of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka after extremist groups announced plans to stage protests around the Indian mission.

These diplomatic exchanges and security concerns have arisen amidst domestic unrest in Bangladesh and protests in India. Protests in India have included demonstrations near the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi over the lynching of a Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, in Bangladesh. Some protesters have accused India of being complicit in the killing of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, further straining relations.
