Sjoerd Marijne back in Indian Hockey: To Coach Women's Team Again, The Dutchman Resumes Charge.

In a significant development for Indian hockey, Sjoerd Marijne has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian women's hockey team for a second stint. Hockey India confirmed the Dutchman's appointment on Friday, marking his return after previously leading the team to a historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. This was only their second appearance at the quadrennial event in more than 36 years.

Marijne's return comes after Harendra Singh resigned from the position on Monday, December 1, 2025, citing personal reasons. Singh's departure followed a tenure that began in April and included winning the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 but also a demotion after a poor performance in the FIH Pro League.

"It's great to be back," Marijne stated. "After 4.5 years, I return with fresh energy and a clear vision to support the team's growth and help the players achieve their full potential on the world stage". During his previous tenure from 2017 to 2021, Marijne helped the Indian women's team reach the top ten in world rankings.

To support Marijne, Matias Vila, a former Argentine midfielder with experience in the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympics, will join as an analytical coach. Dr. Wayne Lombard also returns as the Scientific Advisor and Head of Athletic Performance, supported by Rodet Yila and Ciara Yila as Scientific Advisors.

Marijne's immediate challenge will be the FIH Hockey Women's World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad, Telangana, scheduled from March 8-14, 2026. He is expected to arrive in India on January 14, with the National Coaching Camp commencing on January 19 at SAI, Bengaluru.

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for their swift action in facilitating the appointment. "We welcome Sjoerd Marijne and the entire support staff to the Indian Hockey family," Tirkey said. He emphasized the importance of this decision in ensuring the team's preparation for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers.

Marijne's return marks an important chapter for the Indian women's hockey team as they aim to build on their past achievements and secure a spot in the upcoming major international tournaments.
