Shah Rukh Khan's KKR Sparks Outrage with Bangladeshi Player Acquisition: "Not at Any Cost!"

Shah Rukh Khan, co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), is facing significant backlash following the team's acquisition of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman for ₹9.20 crore in the IPL 2026 auction. The controversy stems from reports of violence against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh, which has fueled anger among some groups in India.

Several Hindu religious leaders and political figures have voiced strong opposition to KKR's decision. BJP leader Sangeet Som went so far as to label Shah Rukh Khan a "traitor," accusing him of supporting a country that is "working against India". Som alleged that Hindus in Bangladesh are facing severe persecution, including attacks on their homes and women. He declared that Rahman would not be allowed to play in India and "won't be able to step outside the airport".

Echoing similar sentiments, Hindu spiritual leader Jagadguru Swami Rambhadracharya questioned Khan's character, stating that his actions were those of a "traitor". Devkinandan Thakur, another Hindu religious leader, demanded that Rahman be removed from the team and suggested the fee be redirected to the affected families in Bangladesh.

The All India Hindu Mahasabha protested against Khan, blackening his posters and warning of a sit-in protest at his Mumbai residence if Bangladeshi cricketers are allowed to play in the IPL. Meera Rathore, District President of the All India Hindu Mahasabha, made a controversial statement, offering ₹1 lakh to anyone who cuts off Shah Rukh Khan's tongue. She accused Khan of having no love for India and of encouraging Bangladeshis.

In Ujjain, religious leaders, including Mahavir Nath, chief priest of the Rinmukteshwar Mahadev Temple, threatened to storm stadiums and disrupt matches involving Rahman. They also threatened to vandalize pitches, raising serious security concerns for IPL organizers.

The controversy has sparked a wider debate about the intersection of cricket, politics, and cross-border tensions. Some argue that sports should remain insulated from geopolitical issues, while others believe that KKR's decision is insensitive to the plight of Hindus in Bangladesh.

Congress leader Surender Rajput accused the BJP leader of targeting Shah Rukh Khan because of his religion. Imam Association president Maulana Sajid Rashidi stated that protests often erupt simply because Muslim names are involved and questioned the basis for objecting to a lawful decision made under constitutional and sporting norms.

Despite the backlash, Mustafizur Rahman is an experienced IPL player, having played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Capitals. However, his availability for IPL 2026 may be limited due to national duties with the Bangladesh national team. There is speculation that KKR may consider resting Rahman for the initial matches to ease tensions.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and IPL authorities face a significant challenge in ensuring security and managing potential disruptions during the upcoming season. The controversy highlights the complexities of navigating political and religious sensitivities in the world of sports.
