In a tragic turn of events, a 19-year-old student, Pallavi, at Government Degree College in Dharamsala, India, has died after allegedly enduring months of ragging, physical assault, and sexual misconduct. The Himachal Pradesh Police have registered a case against a college professor and three female students following a complaint filed by the victim's father. The case is registered under Sections 75, 115(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 3 of the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Act, 2009.
According to the father's complaint, the incidents began on September 18 of last year, when three students allegedly intimidated and physically assaulted Pallavi. He further alleged that a professor subjected her to obscene acts. The father stated that these incidents caused his daughter to become mentally disturbed, leading to a decline in her health.
Pallavi was treated at several hospitals before being referred to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana, where she died on December 26. Her father claims he was unable to file a complaint sooner because his daughter was critically ill and traumatized. The family was also in shock following her death.
Reports indicate that Pallavi gave a detailed account of the humiliation, discrimination, and psychological torture she faced while undergoing treatment. A video accusing the three students and a professor of assault, intimidation, and obscenity has surfaced.
Police have stated that a detailed investigation is underway to determine if the alleged ragging, assault, intimidation, and sexual misconduct were linked to Pallavi's deteriorating health and subsequent death. As part of the investigation, police will record statements from classmates, teachers, college authorities, and family members. Medical records from all hospitals where Pallavi was treated are being collected to ascertain the cause of death and establish any possible connection to the alleged incidents.
A senior police official has assured that the investigation is ongoing and all aspects of the case will be investigated thoroughly and impartially.
