Delhi-NCR residents are breathing easier as the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has revoked the restrictions imposed under Stage-III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) with immediate effect. This decision, made on Friday, January 2, 2026, comes in response to the significant improvement in the region's air quality.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi, which was recorded at a concerning 380 on Thursday, has shown a marked improvement, dropping to 236 by 4 PM on Friday. This positive trend prompted the CAQM Sub-Committee on GRAP to revoke all actions under Stage-III of the plan across the entire National Capital Region (NCR).

The restrictions lifted under GRAP Stage-III primarily target highly polluting activities. These curbs often include a ban on construction and demolition activities (with certain exceptions for essential projects), restrictions on the entry of polluting vehicles into Delhi, and intensified measures to control industrial emissions. The revocation of these measures signals a return to normalcy for many businesses and individuals in the region.

While the Stage-III restrictions have been lifted, it's important to note that measures under Stages I and II of the existing GRAP will remain in force. These ongoing measures include intensified cleaning of roads, sprinkling of water to suppress dust, strict enforcement of pollution control norms at construction sites, and regular monitoring of industrial emissions. Authorities will continue to keep a close watch on the air quality and take necessary actions to prevent any deterioration.

The improved air quality offers a temporary reprieve to Delhi-NCR, a region that consistently battles high levels of air pollution, particularly during the winter months. Factors such as vehicular emissions, industrial activities, construction dust, and stubble burning in neighboring states contribute to the deteriorating air quality, leading to the implementation of emergency measures like GRAP.

The lifting of GRAP-3 restrictions offers short-term relief, but it also underscores the continued need for long-term strategies to combat air pollution in Delhi-NCR. Sustainable solutions involving cleaner transportation, stricter enforcement of environmental regulations, and promoting eco-friendly practices are crucial for ensuring cleaner air in the region.
