Shark Tank India Confrontation: Pet Brand Founder Critiques Supreme Court's Stray Dog Ruling as Overly Harsh

On the latest episode of Shark Tank India 5, Akshay Mahendru, founder of pet-care brand Nootie, voiced his opinion on the Supreme Court's recent directives regarding stray dogs, calling the verdict "harsh". The episode, which featured a face-off between Nootie and cat-first nutrition brand Smylo, saw Mahendru's emotional pitch followed by a grilling from the Sharks.

Namita Thapar, one of the Sharks, initiated the discussion by asking the Delhi-based entrepreneur about his perspective on the Supreme Court's stance on stray dogs in the city. Mahendru responded immediately, stating that he found the court's decision "harsh". He further added that he prefers to refer to stray dogs as "community dogs," emphasizing their integral role within the neighborhoods they inhabit.

Mahendru highlighted Nootie's commitment to community dogs by mentioning their affordable biscuit packs, sold on Swiggy Instamart for just ₹10, specifically formulated for feeding these animals. He clarified that while the profit margin on these biscuits is minimal, their primary goal is to provide a decent and nutritious food option for community dogs. Thapar expressed her appreciation for this initiative, calling it "thoughtful".

The Supreme Court's directives concerning stray dogs have been a subject of debate, with animal rights activists raising concerns about the practicality and humane implications of the orders. The court's intervention mandated that stray dogs be leashed and moved to government-run shelters, raising concerns about the already strained resources of existing shelters and the potential for inhumane treatment. Some activists argue that the orders were based on flawed data and a lack of understanding of the role community dogs play in protecting and caring for their neighborhoods.

Nootie ultimately secured a deal of ₹1 crore for a 4% stake, along with a 1% royalty until the investment is recovered, valuing the company at ₹25 crore. Reflecting on their experience, the Nootie team emphasized their 27-year legacy of making premium pet care accessible and their commitment to building a community that cares for all pets, "from the ones in our homes to the ones on our streets".
