Mumbai, January 14, 2026 - Actor Abhishek Banerjee's cameo in the second season of "Freedom at Midnight" is being seen as a heartfelt tribute to the late Om Puri, an icon he deeply admired. Banerjee stated that Puri "defied the very meaning of what it took to be a hero" in Indian cinema.
Banerjee plays a rioter in the series, driven by vengeance after losing his pregnant wife to communal violence. This character's journey leads him to surrender before Mahatma Gandhi. The show explores the religious and socio-political upheaval during the Partition of India and Pakistan. Notably, Om Puri portrayed a similar character in Richard Attenborough's 1982 film, "Gandhi," starring Ben Kingsley.
"I have grown up admiring one of the biggest acting legends of India, the Late Om Puri sahab," Banerjee told news agency IANS. "He was truly a trailblazer and defied the very meaning of what it took to be a hero". Banerjee added that Puri chose roles and films based on passion, regardless of the role's size.
Nikkhil Advani, the director of "Freedom at Midnight 2," approached Banerjee for the cameo, and Banerjee felt compelled to accept. "That's what I believe is the true spirit of our industry," Banerjee explained. "The role is an homage to Om Puri Sahab's role from Gandhi, and just having the opportunity to step into this character was deeply an honour for me". He shot his portion of the series, with co-star Chirag Vohra, in August 2024.
Banerjee acknowledged that there is "no comparison" between himself and Om Puri's legacy. "He will and is truly a cinematic icon," Banerjee said. However, he felt honored to step into Puri's footsteps, even for a small cameo. He believes that sometimes the smallest parts can leave behind the greatest impact.
The actor revealed that the response to his performance in "Freedom at Midnight Season 2" has been overwhelming. He has received numerous messages and calls appreciating his cameo. "It feels extremely special," he added.
"Playing this cameo in Freedom at Midnight 2 was never about the size of the role for me. It was about what it stood for," Banerjee shared with Mid-day. "Om Puri saab is someone I have admired immensely — for his craft, fearlessness, and the dignity he brought to every character. Stepping into a space that echoes a role he once played felt like a quiet tribute to his legacy,".
The second season of "Freedom at Midnight" explores the chaos that followed Partition, including communal violence, the refugee crisis, the integration of princely states, and political tensions.
Om Puri passed away in 2017 at the age of 66. He was honored at the 89th Academy Awards in the 'In Memoriam' segment for his contribution to world cinema.
