U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor met with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra in Mumbai on Friday to discuss opportunities for increased cooperation between the United States and India. The meeting signals a strengthening of economic and financial ties between the two countries, with a particular focus on technology and institutional partnerships.
Ambassador Gor characterized the meeting as positive, noting that discussions centered on "areas of increased cooperation, including new state-of-the-art U.S. technology". He conveyed his thoughts on X, emphasizing the importance of engagement beyond corporate entities to include key financial and institutional stakeholders.
This meeting took place during Ambassador Gor's first official visit to Mumbai. During the visit, Gor also visited the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai. He commended the team for their work in strengthening the U.S.-India partnership.
The U.S. envoy also recently met with Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran, signaling closer ties between the American government and the Indian conglomerate. He described the meeting with Chandrasekaran as "productive", highlighting Tata Group's 150-year legacy and its significant presence in the United States.
These discussions occur amidst ongoing bilateral trade discussions between the United States and India. While details of the trade agenda were not disclosed, Ambassador Gor has stated that India and the United States remain actively engaged on trade issues and that follow-up meetings between officials are expected soon.
Ambassador Gor presented his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu on January 14th. He expressed his eagerness to work with New Delhi to advance shared priorities in areas such as defense, trade, technology, and critical minerals, with the aim of strengthening the overall bilateral partnership. He stated it was an honor to serve in India during a period of significant promise and opportunity in the U.S.-India relationship.
Furthermore, Ambassador Gor indicated that India would be invited next month to join Pax Silica, a U.S.-led strategic technology initiative focused on semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and critical supply chains. Launched last month, Pax Silica aims to build a secure and innovation-driven silicon supply chain, encompassing critical minerals, energy inputs, advanced manufacturing, and logistics. The initiative initially included countries like Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Israel. Ambassador Gor emphasized the importance of close collaboration between India and the United States from the outset of such initiatives, particularly as new technologies shape the future.
Prior to his ambassadorship, Gor served as Assistant to the U.S. President and Director of Presidential Personnel at the White House. He arrived in New Delhi on January 9th.
