During the filming of "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" (KKHH), Karan Johar, in his directorial debut, experienced a moment of intense distress that led him to tears in front of Salman Khan. The incident occurred during the shoot of the song "Saajanji Ghar Aaye". Salman Khan, who played the role of Aman in the film, had initially arrived on set ready to film in torn jeans and a t-shirt, rather than the black suit that had been prepared for him.
Johar, already anxious about directing his first film and working with a star as big as Salman Khan, was taken aback by this wardrobe choice. He envisioned a sophisticated look for Salman's character in the wedding song, and the casual attire clashed with his vision. Johar nervously tried to explain the grandeur of the set and Kajol's elaborate lehenga, emphasizing the importance of Salman wearing the suit. However, Salman seemed intent on his idea of setting a new trend with a groom wearing torn jeans. He said, "Yes, but if for the first time a groom comes in jeans and a T-shirt, it will be a new style. I'll bring the swag".
As Salman remained firm, Johar's anxiety grew into full-blown panic. He pictured the scene with Salman in jeans and a t-shirt and felt the weight of his directorial debut crashing down around him. Overwhelmed, Johar burst into tears in front of Salman Khan.
Recalling the incident, Johar stated he was very scared of Salman at that moment. Seeing the young director in such distress, Salman Khan relented. He reassured Johar, promising to wear the suit and asking him to stop crying. "Main pehanlunga. Tu rona mat haan, main maar dalunga tujhe, tu rona mat," Salman said.
In earlier discussions about casting for "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", Johar revealed that Salman Khan initially quoted a high price for his cameo, which was beyond the film's budget. According to Johar, after a meeting facilitated by Salman's sister Alvira Khan Agnihotri, Salman showed interest in the role. Despite the initial financial disagreements, Salman ultimately agreed to do the film because he liked Johar and his father, Yash Johar, leaving the payment amount to Johar's discretion.
"Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" was a major commercial success upon its release in 1998, becoming the highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year. Salman Khan's portrayal of Aman was widely appreciated, and he even won a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. The film also stars Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerji and Sana Saeed.
