Trump's Republic Day message highlights US-India ties, while Xi envisions a harmonious Sino-Indian relationship.

On the occasion of India's 77th Republic Day, global leaders extended warm greetings, underscoring the nation's growing international role and partnerships. Among those sending messages were U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose remarks highlighted both shared values and evolving dynamics in the region.

President Trump, in his Republic Day message, emphasized the "historic bond" between the United States and India, referring to both nations as the world's oldest and largest democracies. Trump's message, shared by the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, conveyed congratulations to the government and people of India. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed this sentiment, noting the close cooperation between the two countries in areas such as defense, energy, critical minerals, and emerging technologies, further highlighting the multi-layered engagement through the Quad. Rubio expressed optimism about continued collaboration to advance shared objectives. Sergio Gor, the U.S. Ambassador to India, also attended the Republic Day celebrations and acknowledged the growing strategic partnership between the two nations, symbolized by the presence of U.S.-made aircraft in the Indian sky. Several U.S. governors are encouraging residents to recognize the achievements of the Indian and Indian-American communities and the enduring bonds of friendship. South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden proclaimed January 26, 2026, as "Republic Day of India" in South Dakota.

President Xi Jinping, in his message to President Droupadi Murmu, described India and China as "good neighbours, friends and partners". Xi expressed his belief that improved relations between the two countries align with the fundamental interests of both nations and contribute to global peace and prosperity. He further stated that China sees the relationship as one where both sides "help each other succeed," emphasizing the importance of the "dragon and elephant dancing together". This phrase, also used by Chinese envoy to India Xu Feihong, indicates Beijing's desire for strengthened strategic communication, expanded cooperation, and addressed concerns to promote stable development in China-India relations. Xi's message echoed similar sentiments from April 1, 2025, marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, where he also referenced the "Dragon-Elephant Tango".

These messages come as relations between India and China have shown signs of improvement after the strain of the 2020 border conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to China in August 2025, his first since 2018, and two summits between Prime Minister Modi and President Xi in Kazan in 2024 and later in Tianjin during the SCO summit in August 2025, signal a move towards normalized relations. Direct flights between mainland China and India resumed in October 2025 after a five-year break. During Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's visit to New Delhi in August 2025, both nations agreed to expedite an updated Air Services Agreement and streamline visas.

French President Emmanuel Macron also extended warm greetings, sharing a throwback photo with Prime Minister Modi from the 2024 Republic Day celebrations. Macron mentioned he is looking forward to meeting Modi again in February to continue building the partnership between the two countries. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who attended this year's parade as a Chief Guest along with European Council President Antonio Costa, said it was an "honour of a lifetime" to be part of the celebrations.
