Indian Embassy in Yemen Marks Republic Day After a Decade Amidst Challenging Circumstances

For the first time in over a decade, the Indian Embassy in Yemen commemorated Republic Day. The celebration marks the 77th Republic Day of India and signifies a renewal of diplomatic activities in the region.

The Indian Embassy marked the occasion in Yemen despite the ongoing challenges in the country. The embassy conveyed its celebratory message through a post on X, stating, "Flying the Indian Flag High! For the first time in more than 10 years, Republic Day was celebrated in Yemen. The Indian Community joined the Embassy staff at the celebration of #RepublicDay2026 at @IndianEmbRiyadh office in Aden". The post also included images from the Republic Day celebration.

Across the globe, Indian diplomatic missions also commemorated Republic Day. The Indian Embassy in Myanmar celebrated the day with approximately 500 attendees, including members of the diaspora, local Myanmar residents, mission personnel, and their families. The event included the unfurling of the Indian flag, a reading of the President's address by the Indian Ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur, cultural performances, and refreshments.

In Riyadh, the Indian Embassy hosted a Republic Day celebration attended by nearly 500 people, including prominent members of the Indian diaspora, recipients of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards, embassy officials, and local media. The program commenced with Ambassador Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan raising the Indian flag, followed by the National Anthem and floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi. Ambassador Khan also read the President's address, emphasizing national growth, unity, and resilience to the Indian community residing in Saudi Arabia. The celebration also featured cultural performances by schoolchildren and community members, showcasing classical and contemporary dance and patriotic songs.

In other parts of the world, the Indian tricolor was unfurled and official ceremonies were held in countries such as the United States, Singapore, Japan, and Sri Lanka, with participation from the Indian diaspora and invited guests. In Washington, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio conveyed greetings to India, emphasizing the robust bilateral partnership in areas such as defense, energy, critical minerals, emerging technologies, and the Quad framework. The Indian embassy in Tokyo, Japan, saw Ambassador-designate Nagma M Mallick unfurl the national flag, followed by the national anthem and the reading of the President's address. In Colombo, Sri Lanka, High Commissioner Santosh Jha hoisted the tricolor at India House in the presence of the Indian diaspora and paid tribute at the Indian Peace Keeping Force memorial.

India's 77th Republic Day featured a display of its cultural diversity, economic growth, and military strength at Kartavya Path. The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, were the chief guests at the Republic Day celebrations.
