Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has formally requested that South Korea facilitate additional BTS concerts in Mexico, demonstrating the immense popularity and cultural impact of the K-pop group. The request comes amidst overwhelming demand for tickets to BTS's upcoming performances in Mexico City, scheduled for May 7, 9, and 10 at Estadio GNP Seguros.
Sheinbaum highlighted the significance of BTS's concerts for Mexican youth during a press briefing on January 19th, recognizing the long-standing desire of Mexican fans to see the group perform live. "It is truly fortunate that BTS will hold a concert in Mexico because this is an issue that Mexican youth have long requested," she stated. She even called the tour a "historic" moment for the nation.
The announcement of BTS's world tour, their first in four years, ignited fervent excitement among fans. The Mexico City concerts are a part of this extensive tour, which will cover 34 cities with 79 concerts across 5 continents throughout 2026 and 2027. The Estadio GNP Seguros, with a capacity of over 60,000, has a history of hosting major international acts, including K-pop groups like BLACKPINK and TWICE, as well as artists such as Paul McCartney and Taylor Swift.
However, the high anticipation for the concerts has been accompanied by concerns regarding the ticketing process. Even before the official start of ticket presales, Mexico’s Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) received over 4,000 complaints, related to a lack of clarity regarding ticket prices, service fees, and seating arrangements.
In response to these concerns, President Sheinbaum has taken steps to ensure fair ticketing practices. Ivan Escalante, the head of Profeco, stated that the agency is demanding full transparency from ticket sales agencies, including the timely disclosure of ticket prices, seat maps, and all applicable fees and sales conditions. Profeco also plans to monitor the sales process to protect buyers' personal information and ensure transparency in the allocation of tickets for each sales stage, including the pre-sale quota for the official fan club, ARMY.
Sheinbaum's direct appeal to South Korea underscores the cultural and economic importance of BTS's concerts. The potential for additional concerts reflects not only the band's popularity but also the strong diplomatic and cultural ties between Mexico and South Korea. This unprecedented move of a government requesting more concert dates via a diplomatic letter highlights the extraordinary impact BTS has on the global stage.
