The Delhi High Court has clarified that there is no stay on the trial court proceedings in the sexual harassment case against former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The case was filed by several women wrestlers.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma made the clarification while hearing Singh's plea to quash the FIR and charges framed against him. The court has scheduled the next hearing for April 21.
The High Court raised concerns regarding repeated requests for adjournment by Singh's legal team. Justice Sharma pointed out that the case was filed in August 2024, and no arguments have been presented thus far. The court questioned the reasons for the delay, stating, "Why are you not arguing this? Since you filed this matter, it has not been argued even once". The adjournment request was made due to the unavailability of the senior lawyer.
Six wrestlers had levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is also the ex-President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Following the wrestlers' approach to the Supreme Court, the Delhi Police registered an FIR against Singh.
On June 15, 2023, the Delhi Police filed a chargesheet against Singh, accusing him of offenses under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 354 (outraging modesty), Section 354A (sexually coloured remarks), Section 354D (stalking), and Section 506(1) (criminal intimidation).
