Veteran filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi has reportedly traveled to Manali to narrate the script for Ghatak 2 to Sunny Deol. According to Bollywood Hungama, Santoshi has conceived an idea for the sequel to their successful 1996 film, Ghatak, and shared it with Deol, who expressed interest and invited Santoshi to Manali for a narration. The meeting and narration are expected to occur today, January 31, 2026.
A source told Bollywood Hungama, "Rajkumar Santoshi has cracked an idea which he feels is apt to be made as Ghatak 2. He informed Sunny Deol about it. Sunny got interested in the pitch and asked Mr Santoshi to join him in Manali. Accordingly, the filmmaker left for the Himalayan hill station. He's expected to meet the actor today, January 31, and narrate the script". The source added that the future of the project depends on Deol's reaction to the script, with further development contingent on his enthusiasm, availability, and other factors.
Deol is currently in Manali, Himachal Pradesh, enjoying the success of his recently released film, Border 2. Despite the recent success of sequels like Gadar 2 and Border 2, Deol is supposedly clear that he will not automatically sign onto sequels to capitalize on trends and wants to avoid "cheating the audience". Santoshi also shares this sentiment.
Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi have a history of successful collaborations, including Ghayal (1990), Damini (1993), and Ghatak (1996), all of which were box office hits and are still remembered today. The two are also working together on the upcoming film Lahore 1947, produced by Aamir Khan.
Ghatak, released in 1996, starred Sunny Deol, Meenakshi Seshadri, Amrish Puri, and Danny Denzongpa. Made on a budget of ₹6 crore, the film grossed ₹32.7 crore, becoming one of the highest-grossing films in India that year.
This potential sequel has been discussed for years. In 2018, reports suggested that Deol was creatively involved in developing a story for Ghatak 2 that would serve as a second part to the original, retaining the "David vs Goliath" theme.
If Ghatak 2 moves forward, it would add to the list of Deol's upcoming projects and sequels.
