A 55-year-old man identified as Chhaju Singh, a resident of Channuwala village in Punjab, tragically died in a multi-vehicle collision on Saturday morning in Delhi's Dwarka area. The incident occurred on the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) near Jharoda Kalan. Singh was on his way to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport to drop off his son, Amandeep Singh.
According to police reports, the accident took place due to heavy fog, which severely reduced visibility. A PCR call was received at the Baba Haridas Nagar police station, alerting them to the pile-up on UER-II in the early hours of the morning. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found that multiple vehicles had collided on the stretch of road leading from Jharoda towards the IGI Airport.
Initial inquiries revealed that a taxi with a Punjab registration number, carrying five occupants including the driver, was the last vehicle involved in the chain collision. Chhaju Singh, who was a passenger in the taxi, sustained critical injuries as a result of the crash. He was immediately rushed to Tarak Mehta Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.
Authorities have initiated legal proceedings and are conducting a postmortem examination of the deceased. The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident to determine the exact cause and sequence of events. The focus of the investigation will likely be on the poor visibility conditions caused by the dense fog and whether all drivers were exercising due caution.
The accident caused significant disruption on UER-II, a major road leading to the IGI Airport. The pile-up resulted in temporary traffic congestion as authorities worked to clear the scene and investigate the incident.
This tragic incident highlights the dangers of driving in foggy conditions, especially during the winter months in Delhi. Dense fog can significantly impair visibility, making it difficult for drivers to react in time to avoid accidents. Motorists are urged to take extra precautions when driving in such conditions, including reducing speed, using fog lights, and maintaining a safe following distance.
