A woman in Jharkhand was found partially burnt, prompting her family to allege murder over dowry. The incident has sparked outrage and drawn attention to the persistent issue of dowry-related violence in India.
According to the family, the woman had been facing continuous harassment and demands for dowry from her husband and in-laws. When they could no longer meet the demands, the situation allegedly escalated, leading to her death.
Police reports indicate that authorities were alerted to the incident and arrived at the scene to find the woman with severe burn injuries. The woman was later identified as Basanti Devi, a 24-year-old mother of two minor boys. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Nazir Akhtar stated that an FIR (First Information Report) has been registered based on the statement provided by the deceased woman's brother. In his statement, he claimed that Basanti Devi was often harassed by her husband and in-laws for money and a two-wheeler. He also added that Angad Sao's family was given dowry during his marriage to Basanti Devi, but the demands of her in-laws only kept growing over the years.
The woman's husband, Angad Sao, and his family members had fled the scene, along with the two children. However, Angad's brother-in-law, Nirmal Sao, was present at the residence and has been taken into custody for interrogation. A police team has been formed to apprehend the absconding suspects. The victim's remains have been sent to Hazaribag Medical College for post-mortem.
Dowry-related deaths remain a serious concern in India. Data from the National Crime Records Bureau indicates that dowry deaths account for a significant percentage of female homicides in the country.
