In the early hours of Sunday, February 1, 2026, filmmaker Rohit Shetty's residence in Juhu, Mumbai, became the scene of a startling incident as multiple gunshots were fired outside the building. The Mumbai Police swiftly responded, launching an investigation and increasing security around the premises.
Around 12:45 am, assailants opened fire at the first floor of Shetty's nine-story building, with at least five rounds discharged. One bullet struck the glass facade of a gym within the building. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Shetty's security guard alerted him to the gunfire and subsequently filed a complaint. Bullet shells were recovered from the scene.
The incident triggered panic in the neighborhood and prompted a swift response from law enforcement. The Mumbai Crime Branch has formed 12 special teams to investigate the case. Zonal police and Crime Branch units are jointly involved in the investigation.
As the investigation unfolded, the Lawrence Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility for the attack via a social media post. The post, allegedly uploaded by gang members Shubham Lonkar and Arzu Bishnoi, stated that Shetty had been warned against interfering in their activities. The gang described the firing as a "small trailer," threatening further violence if their warnings were ignored. The message also warned that those who do not comply with the gang's orders would face severe consequences.
The Bishnoi gang has been known to target celebrities, including Salman Khan, AP Dhillon, Kapil Sharma, and Munawar Faruqui.
The Mumbai Police detained five individuals from Pune in connection with the firing incident. The suspects were taken into custody around 2 pm (local time) by Mumbai Police and Crime Branch teams, following inputs from Pune Police. One of the detained individuals is suspected to have fired the shots. The suspects are being interrogated, and police are verifying their exact roles in the incident. Some of the suspects are allegedly linked to Shubham Lonkar.
A social media post, purportedly by Shubham Lonkar and Aarzoo Bishnoi, claimed responsibility for the firing, stating they had warned Rohit Shetty not to interfere in their matters. The post threatened more serious consequences if their warning was ignored, stating that the next shot would be in the bedroom, not outside the house. The post also served as a warning to Bollywood to comply with the gang's orders.
Mumbai Police are working to verify the authenticity of the viral post claiming responsibility and are in contact with central investigative agencies. Police are examining whether the firing was a threat or linked to any other motive. A case has been registered against unidentified assailants under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.
Rohit Shetty is set to return with Golmaal 5, starring Ajay Devgn, expected to release in 2027. He also has an upcoming action film with John Abraham, based on former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria, already in production.
