Shahid Kapoor has recently voiced his opinion on the current state of Bollywood, suggesting the industry isn't producing enough quality films. The actor, who is currently promoting his upcoming film "O' Romeo," shared his thoughts during an appearance on Prakhar Gupta's YouTube channel.
Kapoor stated that Bollywood needs to introspect rather than blaming the audience's dwindling attention spans for box office failures. He believes the core issue lies in the quality of storytelling and the way films are being marketed, often overshadowing the actual artistry.
"It's not that the audience doesn't want to watch films; it's also that we are not making as many good films as we should," Kapoor said, emphasizing that it's a two-way street. He noted that audiences are losing patience and need constant stimulation, while creators are experiencing similar distractions, which impacts their ability to create compelling work. "See, the candle is burning from both ends. The audience is losing patience; their minds can't focus. They need stimulation, they need breaks, because it's a dopamine hit. The creators are doing the same to themselves, so when they try to focus and work, their ability to create is compromised".
The actor also criticized the increasing reliance on "manufactured marketing strategies". While acknowledging the necessity of marketing, Kapoor questioned when promotion crosses the line and becomes excessive or misleading. He elaborated on how genuine artistic expression can be undermined by artificial PR-driven publicity.
Kapoor explained the special connection between an artist and their audience and said, "People don't understand, but it's a miracle of life — that a room full of people is actually clapping, whistling, and acknowledging you, giving you status above their own. It's a very beautiful thing. That's why art is special. But when that purity starts to be disrupted, and something manufactured comes into it, it no longer feels the same". He feels that this purity is compromised when marketing tactics become too contrived.
Shahid Kapoor's film "O' Romeo," directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, is scheduled to release on February 13. The film features a star-studded cast including Triptii Dimri, Nana Patekar, Avinash Tiwary, Tamannaah Bhatia, Disha Patani, Farida Jalal, and Vikrant Massey.
