New Delhi, February 4, 2026 – The Lok Sabha was adjourned today, delaying Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled address, due to persistent uproar from opposition members. The adjournment occurred amidst protests related to multiple issues, including concerns surrounding references to the unpublished memoir of former Army chief M.M. Naravane and the India-US trade deal.

The Lower House faced disruptions from the beginning of the day's proceedings. Opposition members immediately began raising slogans as the House reconvened at midday, focusing on the 2020 standoff with China. The protests follow the suspension of eight opposition MPs and repeated disruptions since Monday.

Speaker Om Birla repeatedly appealed for order, urging members to maintain the House's decorum. He expressed concern that such behavior weakens democracy and the public's trust. Birla specifically criticized the display of banners and posters, some of which featured the former Army chief and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was also seen displaying a book within the House. Despite the Speaker's appeals, the protests continued, leading to the adjournment.

Even during Question Hour, disruptions persisted. Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Nimuben Bambhaniya was unable to complete a response regarding the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana due to the ongoing uproar. This prompted Speaker Birla to again urge members to allow the House to function properly and allow other members to speak.

Despite the disruptions, some parliamentary business was conducted. Speaker Om Birla permitted the placement of parliamentary papers on the table. Additionally, Minister of Commerce Piyush Goyal delivered a statement on the trade deal between the US and India amidst the commotion.

The adjournment marks a continuation of the tumultuous atmosphere that has plagued the Lok Sabha since Monday. The opposition's discontent stems from various issues, including the controversy surrounding references to the unpublished memoir of former Army chief Naravane on the 2020 India-China conflict. The Speaker postponed the proceedings till 2:00 pm due to the persistent opposition members. When the House assembled after the first adjournment at 12 noon, the opposition members again started sloganeering over the issues and trooped into the well.
