Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Lucky Oberoi was shot dead in Jalandhar, Punjab, early Friday morning. The incident occurred around 7:30 am outside a Gurdwara in the Model Town area.
CCTV footage of the incident has emerged, revealing a man in a black hoodie walking up to Oberoi's Mahindra Thar SUV and opening fire. Oberoi was sitting inside the vehicle at the time of the attack, shortly after exiting the Gurdwara. According to police reports, at least two attackers arrived on a scooter and fired multiple rounds, with Oberoi reportedly sustaining five gunshot wounds. Other reports indicate that 8-10 shots were fired from either side of the vehicle, shattering the window panes of Oberoi's car and another parked nearby.
Following the shooting, Oberoi was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. A doctor at Sri Ram Hospital stated that Oberoi was brought in at around 8 am and was given CPR support and put on a ventilator, but could not be saved.
Jalandhar Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur Randhawa confirmed the shooting and stated that investigators believe the attack was well-planned, with the perpetrators likely having scouted the location and monitored Oberoi's movements. Randhawa also noted that initial investigations suggest old enmity as a potential motive.
Police have launched a thorough investigation into the incident, sealing the city and establishing approximately 15 checkpoints. Forensic experts and senior officials were dispatched to the scene to collect evidence. Authorities are examining CCTV footage and questioning local residents and shopkeepers to identify the attackers and reconstruct the events leading up to the shooting. As of now, no arrests have been made.
Lucky Oberoi's wife, Simarjot Kaur, contested in the previous municipal corporation elections on an AAP ticket.
The incident has drawn condemnation from various political figures. The BJP stated that "AAP is Paap for Punjab" following the leader's killing.
