Internet Shutdown in Ukhrul, Manipur: Suspension Follows Recent Incidents of Firing and Arson.

In response to escalating violence, authorities in Manipur's Ukhrul district have imposed an indefinite curfew and suspended internet services for five days. The decision follows a fresh outbreak of unrest marked by incidents of arson and gunfire in Litan Sareikhong village. The violence, which erupted late Monday night, involved armed individuals torching houses and firing shots into the air, creating widespread panic and causing residents to flee their homes.

The internet suspension, effective from 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, covers all internet/data services, including broadband, VPN, and VSAT. N. Ashok Kumar, Manipur's Home Commissioner-cum-Secretary, issued the order, citing the need to prevent misuse of social media by anti-social elements who might incite further unrest through images, posts, and videos.

Despite prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), reports of arson have persisted over the past five days. Security forces have intensified operations in vulnerable areas to prevent further escalation. A police official stated that the curfew and internet suspension aim to restore normalcy, with round-the-clock patrolling in sensitive areas. Residents are urged to maintain peace and cooperate with security personnel.

The recent violence reportedly stemmed from the alleged assault of a Tangkhul Naga community member by Kuki community members. Following this, two Tangkhul Naga organizations restricted the movement of Kuki people in Ukhrul and neighboring Kamjong districts. On Monday night, armed men allegedly set fire to more than eight houses, most of which were abandoned, and fired shots in Litan Sareikhong village. More than 30 houses and other properties have been damaged in the village in the 48 hours through Tuesday afternoon.

Manipur Police reported a minor fire incident in K Lungwiram village, which caused partial damage to a residential house; the cause is under investigation.

The Congress party has called for immediate action to restore peace and prevent further violence, expressing concern over the administration's ability to maintain law and order. Authorities have imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, citing the likelihood of a breach of peace.
